Week Twenty-Seven: What Would You Do With A Pot Of Gold?

Theme: Shamrocks & Leprechauns
We had a fun Happy St. Patrick's Day Party! A tricky Leprechaun visited our classroom making a mess and hiding Leprechaun gold for us to find. We found the gold and gave it to Miss Jodi and then she read us a letter that the Leprechaun had left. We found his missing hat on top of a "pot of gold" filled with golden candy & chocolate coins.

Writing/Reading: Our focus sentence was, "If I had a pot of gold..." Some of the kiddos responses were really touching. One child said, "If I found a pot of gold I'd give it to the robbers, so then they wouldn't have to steal." All of the children wanted to give the gold away or at least share half of it with poor people and their parents :)

Books:

  • Jaime O'Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie dePaola
  • Skyfire by Frank Asch : This book generated a great discussion on what we each might consider as a "pot of gold." For example, I suggested a big pot of golden sand so I could build sandcastles all day. Some of the other ideas included: a pot of golden chocolate, candy, video games, Cheetos,....
  • Do You Know a Leprechaun?
  • Cinderella's Rat by Susan Meddaugh

Week Twenty-Six--"Would you eat them in the dark?"

Theme: Dr. Seuss
We watched a short video clip on the life of Dr. Seuss. We learned many fun things about him. His dad worked at the zoo and so he liked to go and draw pictures of the animals (especially the lions). He became one of the most famous and successful children's authors and illustrators. We had a short discussion about what we like to do and how we can use our talents as adults in our choice of occupation.

Letter
: A
We met "Apple Annie." She brought an apron for me to wear. The children were able to choose one item out of a pocket on my apron. We then did a corresponding activity. We learned that "A" has two sounds. We also learned the sign for "A".

Science: Do Green Eggs taste different than White & Yellow Eggs?

Cute Comment of the Week: "Just seeing the green eggs makes them different so they'll taste different."

Math: Graph of who likes and who doesn't like Green Eggs & Ham. We added up the totals and then compared each class totals to other classes.

Art: Apple Stamping

Writing: Letter "A" & "a". The AM class was given a writing prompt, "I am.." They could choose to write their own names or another word from our word wall.

Reading: Some of our new words this week included: Apple, Ape, Acorn, Apron, Airplane, Am, And, A, & Alligator. We had fun working with the root word "Am" and adding letters to make different words such as "Ham." We also had fun naming rhyming words as we read several Dr. Seuss books.
