A Little Culture & Lots of Confusion

Theme: Chinese New Year

Choosing Time: Dominoes, Chopstick & Wok Pretend Play, Trains, Pokemon, Animals
Music & Movement: Chinese Ribbon Dance, Dragon Dance, Hokey-Pokey, If You're Happy...
Books: The Story About Ping by Majorie Flack & The 5 Chinese Brothers by Claire Huchet Bishop

Lesson:
We talked about the 12 special Chinese Calendar Animals. One child continually repeated that he was born in a hospital :) I believe he did not want to be associated with an animal in any way :) We made the animal sounds and shared what animal we would identify with. No one liked the animal year he/she was born into...We talked a little about how the Chinese write with characters, while we use the ABC's. We looked at some authentic Chinese Books with amazing illustrations. Hopefully, the the things that stuck are: Chinese colors are red & gold and the Chinese people like dragons :)

Language: We learned a couple of Chinese words: Hello, Dad, Mom, & Thank you

AM Art: We made a Dragon together!
PM Art: We made Chinese pictures
AM Snack: Chow Mein & Lo Mein (Top Ramen) Noodles & "Almond" Cookies (Vanilla Wafers)
PM Snack: Goldfish (lucky symbol in China), Graham Crackers, & Fortune Cookies
