Cars, Cats, & Cookies!

Theme:  "C" is for Cookie

Choosing Time:  Cars, Garage, Cars Memory, Little Critters

Lesson:  We met Callie Cat and learned that "C" is a fun letter.  We brainstormed words that begin with the "C" sound.  I'm quite impressed with the words the kiddos came up with:  cool, car, crab, cave, cake, ........I showed them a series of pictures.  We had to decide which ones had the "C" sound.

Week Twenty-Four-- "C" is for Cookie

Letter: C
"Callie Cat" introduced us to letter "C". "C" is sneaky. It can make two sounds by itself. It also makes a different sound when "H" follows it. We had fun taking some "CH" words and pronouncing them without the "H"...for example..."Chocolate without the "H" would be "Cocolate"....And then we had fun adding an "H" to some "C" words...for example "Can" with an "H" is "Chan." We giggled a lot.

Choosing Time: Cars, "C" Memory, Cups, Cats, Castles....

Math: Cat Graphing & a lot of COUNTING

Reading: Some of our Word Wall Words included: Cat, Cup, Cupcake, Color, Caterpillar, Can,...

Writing: We practiced "C" and some of us wrote "Cat"

Field-Trip to Days Market: We had an adventure exploring the grocery store with Tim & Paula. They helped us to identify some interesting vegetables such as brussel sprouts, broccoflower, tomatillos, & cilantro. We enjoyed watching the vegetables get "rained" on. We saw how they recycle the boxes using a big "crusher" and then pack the smashed boxes into bales. We saw & entered the giant refrigerators and freezers. We went to the loading dock where the big trucks deliver the boxes of food to the store. We met a couple of their butchers, Mike & Chuck. We were able to feel the chain mail glove that they wear to protect their hands from getting cut while they cut the meat. We learned how important cows are to our diets. We also went to the bakery and saw the enormous oven they use to bake cookies and bread. The oven can hold 15 pans at a time. The pans are rolled into the oven on a cart. The cart spins while the oven bakes (kind of like a washing machine). We actually were able to meet Alan Day, the owner of the store, who was very kind to the children. At the end of our tour we were each given a cookie and a slice of bread that they make there each day. Yum!
