Week Twenty-One: X-tra X-tra Read All About It!

Theme: Dental Health
We were privileged to take a field trip (eXcursion) to 9th Street Dental! Dr. Huang & his associates were eXtraordinary!
We began our adventure in the waiting room. We all were eXcited to see a Disney Movie playing...
We met Dr. Huang and he took us back to see his large X-ray machine and some dental X-rays on his computer screen....
Dr. Huang showed us a model of a giant mouth. We were able to feel the teeth and tongue.

After teasing us with the wrong ways to brush our teeth, Dr. Huang showed us the proper ways to brush including: 1) the front of the teeth, 2) the back of the teeth, 3) the tops of the teeth, & 4) the tongue. He reminded each of us how important it is to really do a good job and spend 2 minutes brushing to get rid of all the sugar bugs.
We played a game. Dr. Huang showed us several foods. If it was a good food (like yogurt) we put our thumbs up :)
Dr. Huang explained how important flossing our teeth is. He asked for volunteers for our next game.
We had several eager helpers to stand together to be teeth :)
A couple of volunteers "brushed" the "teeth".
We practiced "flossing" the "teeth".
A perfect demonstration of how to sit properly in the dental chair :)
Anyone who WANTED to sit in the chair had an opportunity to.
He only looks upset....he was really happy :)
Can you tell from the pictures who may want to grow up to be a dentist? There may be a prize involved....
After our eXcursions were over, Dr. Huang mentioned to me that there were a few children who he think may need dental treatment. He ONLY BRIEFLY LOOKED into their mouths and only had a quick look. It was NOT an EXAM. I just feel that I should suggest getting your children into a dentist especially if they haven't been :)

Letter: X
We met Rex Fox. We noticed that X & x are written the same and only differ in size. We practiced the sign for X and its sound. We think X may be a bit shy because it seems to prefer to be in the middle of words or at the end of words. I explained how sometimes people write an OXOX at the end of a letter. We learned what OXOX represents and giggled a lot. We played a game to eXplore more X related things....
We had lots of fun making X's with our bodies

Game: Choose Something from the special box....
Inside the box were names of pictures of words with X, songs, books, & movement activities. We each took a turn to pull something out of the box and then we did what it said.

Choosing Time: Boxes, Zoobies, Bristle blocks,....

Show:
Music BoX
Xerox Copy
X-Ray
Writing X
Bathtub X
Tooth Fairy Pillow
(Which started a complete discussion about how all mammals lose their "baby" teeth, and then grow big new ones)

& Tell:
If a child doesn't have something to show I will ask a question...This week I asked the same question to several children and thought you'd like to hear the responses....
After asking if anyone knew what "excited" means and then having a delightful discussion this was the Question: "What is something that you are excited about?"
Answers:

"The Fart Game"
"Losing something in the sand at the beach and then finding it again"

Week Twenty--Ya-hoo!

Theme: Happy Chinese New Year
One day to talk about some Chinese Cultural Activities is not enough! However, we enjoyed our dragon parade, learning what animal year we were born in, and looking at pictures of Chinese writing, dress, & decor.

Letter: Y
We met Yolanda the Yak. She explained that "Y" & "y" look like "V" without their "tails." She told us how to say the sound of "Y". One cutie kiddo asked, "Does "Y" spell "why"?" (Super Clever & Insightful!) And so, we had a brief explanation about that. We made "Y" with our bodies and even had fun making "Y" upside down with my help :) We learned how to sign "Y". Some noticed how it is similar to the sign, "I Love You." I explained that the "Y" is the "You" part of that sign.
